At this point, I’m tired of Ferrari. This is a bullshit move by a company famous for bullshittery.

The foundation in question registered the trademark in 2013 and has a partnership with Adi das on the book. Ferrari is once again, being a corporate bully.

don’t know how it works in much of Europe, but IIRC this would be a hard case for Ferrari to win in the US since “purosangue” is an existing word and not one they made up, and the Purosangue Foundation is not involved in anything automotive.

They have the trademark for clothing and other branded items, which is what Ferrari really wants. The cars drive sales of cologne, sunglasses, and baseball caps.

I mean if a non-profit is actually violating a trademark, then sure, go ahead and sue. This doesn’t seem like that though, I don’t know Italian/EU trademark law, but there are a whole ton of reasons this suit would fail in the US. Seems more likely Ferrari thinks they can just bully the non-profit with the threat of ruinous litigation costs.

the Purosangue name, a word that means “thoroughbred” or “pur e blood”

Even if the name was free for the taking, w hy does Ferrari want i t so badly? This is going to be Ferrari’s first SUV, right? Something about a SUV just doesn’t seem very   “thoroughbred/pure blood” considering the company’s history . It feels like a lame attempt to convince buyers that it really i s a legit Ferrari.

They seriously couldn’t come up with something better than that? Oh wait I forgot . This is the same company that name s their cars “Ferrari LaFerrari” and “ Ferrari Enzo Ferrari”. Creativity obviously i sn’ t their strong suit.

It does seem as though the charity doesn’t really have much, if any, operations or activities. Trademarks can be forfeited through lack of use, which is what Ferrari claims  is happening here.

I mean from their website they are clearly active. You can lose trademarks through disuse, but not because somebody else has bigger plans.

Also, honesty with a suv probably doesn’t work either..

Ferrari Culo Grasso? No

Ferrari Brut to e Lento? No

Ferrari V acca da M ungere? No

I'm out of ideas..

So I guess when this SUV comes out, we’ll remember it as that car Ferrari sued a non-profit for.

More to the point, the charity registered the name in 2013; right around the time Ferrari was saying “we’ll never build an SUV.” They own the term for marketing etc... purposes. Ferrari is out of bounds here.

Right. Ferrari presumably can use the name for the SUV without problem, since there’s no chance of confusion, but there’s no way they should be able to steal the name from on organization that has been using it for years.
